The Club Run:

A “run” is when members of the club get together and ride as a group. Runs occur all the time and for many different reasons, but they are always club sanctioned and for a specific purpose. A run is the club’s fundamental reason for existing – this is where the guys get together, take risks, get rowdy and daring on the road, and enjoy all the freedom of mobility. Basically, it’s where all the fun happens. Runs can be festive and celebratory or they can be for official club business where the stakes are often dangerous and high. But no matter the reason, patch-holders are always down.

Unless it’s for an immediate club emergency, be it personal or business, runs take a great deal of planning. The right supplies are gathered, and the bikes are cleaned. Quite often a crash truck will either trail or precede the bikes. The truck will carry spare parts in case of breakdowns, sleeping bags, beer, food, etc.

In sticking with the system of club hierarchy, members ride in a specific formation. Clay, SAMCRO President rides at the front of the formation. Jax, SAMCRO V-P, and Bobby, Secretary-Treasurer ride two abreast behind him, and so on and so forth down the chain. If Clay is not present, Jax will take the forward slot.

When the club rides together, the magnitude of their dynamic force is truly felt – from the collective roar of their bikes, to the power of their unity. It’s on these runs that no member of SOA need be reminded of how truly awesome it is to be a brother.

The Women:

There is no shortage of women who associate with SOA. Like bees to honey, ladies flock to the club. Generally, these are the type of women who love bad boys and macho men. But they are also women who, by choosing to be a part of the SOA world, choose all the good and bad that comes with club living. For many women, it’s pure excitement – loud and fast bikes, tough men, and all the accoutrement that comes with a good party. But, despite the fact that they’re not members themselves, their dedication to the club is just as greatly demanded and expected. Once you’re involved with the club it’s not a lifestyle, but, rather, a way of life.

The women involved with SOA fall under a few categories. But regardless of which a woman belongs, one thing remains constant – know your place.

A woman will be one of the following:

Old Lady

Wife or steady girlfriend of a club member. She’s monogamous and has the respect of the other women. There is usually one Queen. The main old lady. For Sam Crow, that queen is Gemma Teller.

Mama

One of the names for a girl or woman available to club members for companionship, partying and sex.

Sweetbutt

A more affectionate name for a “mama”.

Crow-Eaters

Women in Charming who love the bad boys and bikes of Samcro. Samcro groupies. (This title is exclusive to SAMCRO alone.)

For Mamas, Sweetbutts, and Crow-Eaters, that place is simple. Mind your own business; keep the guys happy and satisfied, and the parties raging. In return, these women earn the street juice, respect and safety of being associated with outlaws

For Old Ladies, there is much greater responsibility involved. Many believe that the better the old lady, the better the member. In that sense, old ladies are the heart of the club family. Because of this there are several duties and rules of decorum SOA old ladies must follow. But two remain important above all else…

1. Once you become a member’s old lady, or if your man patches-in, you’re not only taking on him, but the entire club. In short, your family just got a lot bigger. You now have a permanent open door, which means any brother or sister is welcome at anytime for any reason. And always be a good hostess, be it at your home, the home of a sister, or the clubhouse.

2. Most importantly, do not be nosy. Club business is club business and not yours. Expect that you are always on a need-to-know basis. And, what you do know, you don’t. And anything pertaining to the club is never to be repeated under any circumstances.

It’s an honor to be an SOA old lady. And this honor is marked by the privilege of receiving a tattoo. For Sam Crow that tattoo is a Crow with a heart on it. Gemma and Wendy all have the same tattoo as well as Tara who still wears hers to remind her of the past. The club is your family and will protect and cherish you as a family.

The Sound:

Music for the show plays a crucial part in depicting the world of Samcro as well as the simplicity of life in a town like Charming. It must reflect both the authentic rebelliousness and freedom of the club lifestyle but also have playful Americana undertones.

The man responsible for capturing this is acclaimed producer/songwriter/musician Bob Thiele Jr., whose major task as theme song composer and co-music supervisor is to make the music as authentic as possible. He does this by drawing from a specific musical palette, using a great deal of guitar and accordion, keeping it simple as anything too orchestral or overly computer generated becomes distracting and can hinder instead of adding to the characters and their stories. This very notion is best captured in the show’s theme song “This Life.”

For the song, Bob teamed up with guitarist/songwriter/and all around badass Dave Kushner of the band Velvet Revolver, as well as famed musician Curtis Stigers (who sings it.) The three are in works to lay down a full recording of the song to be available soon. Further details to follow…

In many ways SOA is a contemporary western, a cowboy story complete with all the thrills and pangs that comes with it. Our cowboy, Jax, is isolated in his conflict over the club and his family. Thematically, it’s important to capture Jax’s confusion with a classic lonesome cowboy edge, but also show the tradition and excitement of the world…

Ride into this world

All alone

God takes your soul

You’re on your own.

The crow flies straight

A perfect line

On the devil’s back

Until you die.

Gotta look this life in the eye.

The combination of these elements truly reflects our characters lives: The good, the bad and the crow.
