Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam made a major sacrifice for the second season of the FX drama: He lost a tooth.

“I’m sure it was worth it, but I’ve got a thing about my teeth,” the English actor tells TVGuide.com with a laugh. “My mum was really psychotic when I was growing up about taking care of our teeth. I don’t have a single filling; I’ve never had anything done to my teeth, so it was kind of a bummer.”

The jaw-jacking scene won’t hit TV screens until the middle of this season, but it comes as the tension between Hunnam’s character, Jax, and SAMCRO leader Clay (Ron Perlman) reaches fever pitch. Hunnam says Jax tries to avoid a physical altercation for as long as he can. “Jax tries to play an intellectual game with Clay rather than going in, guns blazing,” he says. “But as his efforts get thwarted, his frustrations rise, and it all kind of comes to a head in a very violent fashion.”

Jax is still frustrated by the Season 1 murder of Donna, the wife of his best friend, Opie (Ryan Hurst). Donna died in a hit Clay ordered on Opie, but Jax keeps quiet for the sake of the club — much as he did when he helped Opie kill a Mayan gang member on whom Clay pinned Donna’s murder in the Season 2 premiere.

“Jax felt some remorse, but at the same time, they are at war with the Mayans,” Hunnam says. “There have been many casualties over the years at the hands of the Mayans, and this guy was a bad man, a gangster. He wasn’t an innocent man — he was just innocent of that particular crime. I think Jax toiled with that, but his allegiance is to the club, and whatever needs to be done to protect his brothers is what’s going to get done.”

Kurt Sutter recently took to his blog to express his appreciation to everyone who helped SOA pull in its record numbers for the start of season 02 – keep reading for the details or visit his blog here

We made a little cable TV history last night, kids. The specifics are in the official press release issued by the network below. FX and Fox 21 did an outstanding job promoting the show and getting the word out. The promos, the aerial banners, the billboards — it was all brilliant. But this exceptional number is because all of you spread the word and made the effort to tune in. I am truly humbled by this showing.

I’ve watched the fanbase of this show grow steadily over the past year. It’s been an amazing experience. As a storyteller, you live with these characters, these fantasies in your head. They are very real and very personal to me. To share them with an audience is as terrifying as it is exhilarating — the artist’s paradox. To see everyone embrace these people, this world and invest in it, is unbelievably gratifying. I thank you for taking this ride with me and I promise to continue to tell stories from depth of my blackened soul.

I love all you m*therf*ckers.

If any one word describes Henry Rollins, it’s ‘intense.’ Whether on the stage singing or speeding a Hummer along sand dunes while Steve-O gets a tattoo in the back seat, he has always emitted a visceral attitude. PopEater had a chance to sit down with Rollins and discuss his role on Sons of Anarchy.

Can you tell me a little bit about your role in ‘Sons of Anarchy’?

Yeah, I’m a white supremacist, I have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, besides that I like my kids. Past that, I’m not the kind of ‘bad guy’ you root for… at all… He’s not an emotional person so it’s not like he has to hug and cry a lot. Um, he kind of just takes his orders and goes and does his thing. And so it’s a very tight ship my face keeps. You know? And that’s why you’ll see me in parts like that, because I can deliver that.

Were you a fan of the show before taking on the role?

I was a huge fan of the show and of Kurt Sutter, the director… I’m not in a position where I get to pick and choose roles. I usually go on auditions in long lines and embarrass myself in front of casting directors, and with a lump in my throat and my ears burning, I walk past reception and smirking actors as I go to the parking garage and go back on the highway. So, it’s rare for someone to say to me “Hey, we want to put you in this, what do you think?” … My manager says “Hey, Kurt Sutter wants to talk to you”, which is kind of a mind blowing idea. So I said “Well, damn… ok, twist my arm.” And so I went for the meeting, he asked if I knew what they were doing there. I said “Yeah, I know you, I love the show”, he says “Great, here’s what we’re thinking about and want to gauge your interest.” So he told me about that part, “Yeah! That’s interesting.”… I leapt at the chance to be in the show and would have even been happy with a smaller part, I would have been happy just to work on it for a day, so I feel I’m just really lucky.

What about the other cast members?

Well, when you really get to work with these people, like Charlie Hunnam, our lead guy. Charlie has an astonishing amount of talent and besides that, a great amount of charisma. He just has a real natural presence, it’s great to watch. We all went to a big theater the other night to watch episode one. And I mean, he’s really got a great thing. And I did some intense scenes yesterday with him and Ryan Hurst. Ryan is a guy named ‘Opie’ in the cast. And he is just one HEAVY guy, he is a serious actor and it’s, he’s a wonderful guy, but when he’s in character he hits like a Mack truck. It’s really something, the guy is like burning, ya know? And being around that is really, really inspirational. It makes you better, it makes you have to reach up and pull for it.

FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” came roaring back to record ratings Tuesday night.

The second season premiere hit a series high by a mile, growing 95% (!!!) in the adult demo compared to its first season premiere.

“Sons” was seen by 4.3 million viewers and earned a 2.8 demo rating.

That represents the largest season two premiere gain for any series in FX’s history (“The Shield” returned to a 3% increase and “Nip/Tuck” had a 33% gain).

This is great news for FX, a network that’s doggedly stuck to its quality shows brand even as its veteran dramas have inevitably sagged and newer efforts have underwhelmed.

“Sons” premiered last year against the Republican convention’s VP candidate’s address — usually a safe bet for sluggish competition until the GOP drafted Sarah Palin for the post and enjoyed a ratings blow out. After a lackluster debut, “Sons” continued to post steady numbers throughout its first season.

But FX began to get a hint that the show could return strong during its repeat run when airings at 1 a.m. drew more than a half million adults 18-49.

“We’ve had some indication there was a lot of audience out there,” said FX president and general manager John Landgraf. “There was a lot of passion among people who were glad it was back.

Critics heaped lavish praise on the premiere, as well. On Metacritic, the return of “Sons of Anarchy” drew the same average score (86) as the third season debut of “Mad Men.”
