The Sons of Anarchy went to Ireland on season three.

But series creator Kurt Sutter says he won’t need to take the club anywhere exotic next year. That’s because the town in which they reside will already be so much different than the one they’ve protected for years.

a1e2bd88c680315e11e3ed5497bc9fb4 Sons of Anarchy Season 4: Not So Charming...

“Season 4 will really be about dealing with the ramifications of new information, and it’s a different Charming that they’re coming back to. It’s a different gun business for them. The 21st Century really starts to creep into the town and into the club.”

What does that mean, precisely? Sutter told TV Guide:

“I think ultimately there’s a lot more progress in the town with Hale now becoming mayor there’ll be a lot more development in the town. All the things they’ve been trying to avoid for years will ultimately start to creep in. If they can’t keep Charming contained anymore, how do they deal with that?”

In the end, things will come down to Clay, Gemma and Jax. As usual.

“Ultimately, it is about the three of them and everything sort of is either background or devices to complicate all those relationships,” Sutter says. “Clay has a personal connection with Charming and there’s something about the karmic weight of if he can keep that town small and safe, everything else we do is OK. So I think it’s important for Clay to maintain that relationship with Charming. It will be interesting to see how he deals with that this season.”

For more on what’s ahead, check out another interview Sutter gave soon after the third season finale aired.

Abel is back home, Tara is safe, and Gemma was able to get off with only house arrest. All is well in Charming as the MC celebrates with a big, celebratory breakfast. Lyla and Opie even announce their engagement to the club.  But while cleaning up, Gemma finds the Real IRA folder in Jax’s cut; she is stunned to find out that Jax is giving up the IRA council.  Later, Clay tells Gemma they gotta find Jimmy to make good on the deal they made with the IRA.  Gemma knows this can’t be good for Jax, or anyone.  She decides to turn herself in to help save Jax. While in a jail cell, she tells Stahl to kill the deal or she’ll tell the US attorney that Stahl’s case is all bullshit and the testimony was all  a lie.  She tells Stahl that nothing can ever work if it’s based on lies, someone will get hurt. When Clay comes to get Gemma, she cryptically tells him that they can’t look at Jax in the same light as John. Then, we see Jax at his father’s gravesite. He leaves the NS ring right next to the SO ring. Leaving their relationship in the grave.

Jax meets with Stahl who informs him of what Gemma threatened to do. She reminds him time is running out, the bail hearing is tomorrow and she needs Jimmy or at least some kind of information, as a show of good faith. He gives her back the folder with the IRA council and says he’ll sign off on all of them when all is said and done.

Clay and Bobby pay a visit to Big Otto at Stockton State Prison.  He says Lenny the Pimp is real tight with the Russians, he should be able to get a location for where their keeping Jimmy. When Otto and Lenny finally meet, Lenny tells him the only way to get to Jimmy is to buy him from Putlova, the Russian contact in Northern California. After going back and forth through lawyers, Samcro is able to get a location for Jimmy, but the Russians want two million dollars to turn him over to them. This is when Chucky comes in to save the day. When he was running counterfeit money for Lin, he kept the misprints – five million dollars worth. It’s an SOA payday. They’ll need to mix the fake money with real money to distract the Russians. Jax gets the money from Stahl. But the only catch is she wants to be there for the exchange. He reluctantly agrees, but tells her she’s gotta stay a few miles back.

It’s time to meet the Russians and make the exchange.  Jimmy learns real quickly that Putlova sold him out as he gets out of Putlova’s SUV and sees Clay and the rest of SOA. Samcro hands the cash over to the Russians who inspect it. All good. They hand over Jimmy. His fate sealed. As the MC takes off with Jimmy in tow, Putlova takes a look at the cash and realizes he’s been had – the money is fake. The Russians go after Samcro, but turn around when they see Stahl and the ATF vehicles staged down the road, waiting for them. Samcro also flees the ATF roadblock, leaving the tactical van behind. Stahl opens the van door and finds it empty. Livid, she meets with Jax who says the only way he’ll turn Jimmy over is if she frees the guys of hard time. The two take each other in, unsure if they should trust each other. Stahl says in order for her to move forward, she needs to see Jimmy alive. So Jax takes her to Teller-Morrow and gives her Jimmy. When Clay asks how she knew Jimmy was there, she makes a decision and rats out Jax in front of his brothers. His fate sealed. They snap, hell breaks loose, and Gemma’s devastated. Guards haul away Jax, Clay, Bobby, Tig, Juice, and Happy in a prison transport vehicle,  the men are enraged and disgusted at Jax for turning on his club.

We then see Chibs, Opie, and Kozik in the Wahewa School Bus, Opie has a Mac-10, –they’re driving with purpose. Unser, his office in boxes, places his gun and badge on his desk. He pulls out his personal pistol from his desk.  As Stahl and Estevez transport Jimmy, they’re tailed by Unser in his police car who signals for them to pull over. He says he got a tip that Jimmy’s goons would be waiting for them at a turnout, just wanted to warn them. Estevez and the other agent go check it out, leaving Stahl and Unser with Jimmy. Then, the school bus pulls up — Chibs, Opie, and Kozik rush out. Chibs goes to Jimmy, pulls him out of the sedan. The men take each other in, bad blood between the two.  Chibs takes two ‘chibs’ from his cut, slashing Jimmy’s face. He then drives both blades into Jimmy’s throat and twists, killing Jimmy O’Phelan. Meanwhile, Opie orders Stahl to get in the car and put her hands on the wheel. He’s in the backseat as she pleads for her life. He tells Stahl this is what Donna felt. Then he shoots Stahl in the head, she slumps on the wheel, dead. He grabs the RIRA folder off the front seat and tears it apart. Chibs then paints the Real IRA symbol on the windshield of the car in Jimmy’s blood. As the men leave, Unser, having played his part in the whole thing, tells Kozik to clock him. He then calls it in. Unser’s back on the team. As the prospects follow the prison transport vehicle, they get a text. They start honking as they pass the transport vehicle. Inside, we see Jax’s face light up, then Clay’s, as all the men burst out in laughter. Their plan worked. It’s finished. The prospects deliver a letter as instructed to Gemma, which explains everything. Gemma’s relieved, she cries tears of joy.  We then follow Tara, in the nursery, as she processes the day. She sees Jax’s duffle, picks it up, and inside finds the letters Maureen put in there for Jax. Curious, she takes the letters out and starts reading. As she reads, Tara’s is horrified to learn that John was afraid he would die at the hands of Gemma and Clay and his wishes for Jax to stay out of the life. But what will Tara do with all this new information. We will have to wait and see…

Where did last night’s gripping Sons of Anarchy season-ender leave our favorite motorcycle club, and what can we expect from one of our favorite shows going forward?

If you haven’t read it, here’s our take on the Sons of Anarchy season three finale. Read it and leave us comments with your thoughts. Now, let’s look ahead to next year.

In a lengthy Q&A with E! Online, creator and show-runner Kurt Sutter talked about the changes the finale sets up for season four. Here are some notable excerpts …

86ddcafea6b9aeb7da53a695f25f8e25 Sons of Anarchy Season Four Spoilers: Whats Next For the Family and the Club?

On how Jax is now going to operate differently than John did: “Jax was finding out that John’s whole life was essentially a lie and that he was going to bail on it.”

“His dad was going to bail on Gemma and had this kid with this other woman, and ultimately that he wasn’t as strong a man as Jax had envisioned him to be.”

“Jax is not running away, and he is committed to Tara, and he’s not looking for something outside of the life. Obviously, the decisions that he makes put him deeper into the machinations of the club. He’s distanced himself from the notion of trying to change things.”

“Really, in a lot of ways, he’s becoming more like his mother.

On when season four will pick up: “There will be a gap in time. I haven’t decided if we’ll start with them in jail and getting out or if we’ll begin with them already out of jail, but we’re not going to spend half a season or a season in jail. Sons is not going to become Oz.”

On what Charming will look like in 14 months: “It’ll be a different Charming. There will be a new mayor and a new sheriff. The 21st century is going to land at SAMCRO’s doorstep. It’ll be interesting, because the 21st century will also bleed into their lives.”

“The gun business will be exponentially bigger as a result of the Irish deal, so they themselves will be upgrading, but everything else around them will also be changing.”

“Not that I’m thematically trying to make a big point in terms of all that, but Charming really has been Mayberry—it’s been an anachronism, and in my mind, we’ll start to see that shift, and how do they handle that shift. Do they try to throw the brakes on it?”

“Do they embrace it? What happens to the big fish when the pond gets bigger?”

On the club’s struggling finances: “They’ve had a tough run, ever since Abel was born, between legal fees and everything else, but I do think that, as Clay said to Gemma, this is an opportunity for them to finish big. We’ll see that start to happen.”

On whether Kozik will stick around: “I love Kenny Johnson and I love the character, but I didn’t vote him in was because I wanted to leave it up in the air a little bit. I thought it would have been too neat if they had all this conflict and then it just went away.”

“Because we did spend so much time away from our core guys this season, next season I really want to find some great storylines for our guys. Kenny is such a great actor that I don’t want to waste that on some little three-episode arc.”

“If I can use him, then I really want to find a way to use him rather than have him reduced to one of the guys riding up on a bike.

On Happy’s place in the cast: “I say this not in a judgmental or flip way, but really in a character way, that a little Happy goes a long way. Do you know what I mean?”

“Too much Happy storyline is overwhelming. The moment he had in the torture scene where everyone is appalled and he’s smiling like a four-year-old, that’s all you need.”

“Happy is a little bit of the sociopath, and you don’t like it to get too stereotyped or clichéd. But D.L. will definitely be around. I think he’ll be in 9-10 episodes next season.”

27f81dd5828588e86166353d85f7f4fd Sons of Anarchy Season Four Spoilers: Whats Next For the Family and the Club?

On the new prospects sticking around as well: “They’re so unlikely in terms of this club! It’s my experience that the more time I spend with the guys in this world, that actually it’s the guys that never fit in that are the guys that are pledging clubs.”

“That’s why I love those two actors. They’re funny without having to do much with them, and I imagine they’ll be back … we’ll wait to have that play out.”

On adding new gangs: “I don’t know if we’ll do any more MCs next year, but on The Shield every couple of seasons we would get bored with our clubs and gangs, and we’d introduce new ones, but I think some that we’ve introduced will come back.”

On Lenny the Pimp: “Lenny was part of the First Nine; I think we talk about it in the iPad app – we have a whole thing coming out on the First Nine. The only ones still living are Clay (Ron Perlman), Piney (William Lucking) and Lenny.”

On whether Tara is having a boy or not: “Uh … I haven’t decided on that, but I’ll say this: It is the Sons of Anarchy.”

On Trinity’s role: “I don’t know if it will be next season, but I think that at some point, perhaps, as the mythology continues to unfold, I think there might be an opportunity to bring her back. She was so much fun, and I thought Zoe did a great job.”

On more Jax-Tara backstory: “We’re not going to do flashbacks, but if there’s a way to get out that information, like we did in season one with Stahl, in a way that makes sense and moves the story along whether it’s narrative or just character, then yeah, I’m always hoping to reveal some of the mythology, I just don’t know off-hand what that might mean in terms of season four.”

While it in no way makes up for the struggles of the first two-thirds of the season, the final stretch of Sons of Anarchy has been absolutely fantastic. The third season finale, “NS,” had excitement, drama, surprises, and left me asking questions about what would happen next.

For the final 30 minutes I was on the edge of my seat, holding my breath, as well as any other cliche you’d like to use to explain how riveting the final chapter of this season was.

048da72855c852beb121914bfc5e2f7c Sons of Anarchy Season Finale Review: "NS"

I had no idea what SAMCRO’s plan was as they drove off to make the deal with the Russians for Jimmy O. There was a point where I was ready for everyone to pull their guns out and kill each other. Then I thought that maybe everything ended swimmingly with Jax’s original plan working out perfectly. And then once Stahl ratted Jackson out as a rat himself, I was prepared to cry for my favorite Vice President.

It was just a very nice fake-out by both SAMCRO and Sutter and company.

Neither Stahl, the Russians, nor I knew what was going on. Nice acting by both Charlie Hunnam as Jackson Teller in that moment, as the ATF thought they had won, Jimmy O thought he was escaping death, and I thought Jax was screwed with his club.

At the same time ,though, as for a majority of the season, I wondered what the big deal was. I understand that ratting anything or anyone out to the Feds is a huge no-no in the outlaw business, but Jax was getting Gemma out of prison, severely shortening SAMCRO’s sentence, and screwing over some Irish that none of them were close to.

I don’t get why the club would have been so outraged with Jackson.

It was nice to see SAMCRO, and the show itself, let those who had been hurt by Jimmy O and Stahl, respectively, be the ones to finish them off. I really had forgotten that Chibs and Opie were not with the rest of the crew up until I saw them arrive to the scene in the school bus.

Now, I was not surprised at all to see Chibs slice up Jimmy with scars not unlike his own before murdering him, but I was a bit shocked by Opie’s murderous ways. I know Stahl is an awful human being, who played a large role in the death of Donna, but I did not want to see Opie as an executioner.

Now that Jax has made his choice to say “screw you dad, I’m going with Mom and Clay,” I thought Opie was my only hope of a Son staying semi-straight. So what will Jax’s mindset be next season? He’s committed to Gemma and Clay more than ever, making the dilemma of what he’ll do when he learns the truth about their past with his father utterly fascinating to ponder.

Let us not just skim over that fact. It was implied since the beginning, but stated here that the leaders of the club we are supposed to have feelings for murdered the founder of Sons of Anarchy.

Our protagonist’s father. The man that this whole series may well be about. He was murdered, or at least ordered to death, by Clay and Gemma. Because he wasn’t into the outlaw ways of the club? Was he a rat?  Jax’s comments about not being like his father make it seem that way.

No matter what the reason, I hold John Teller in such high esteem that I automatically dislike these two characters much more than I already did.

The big question is what does this do to Jax. Jackson started the series as a guy that didn’t really want the outlaw life. He then struggled for a couple of seasons with what he wanted for his life and the life of his children. If the events of this week’s episode ring true to his actual motives, it seems Jax has chosen the dark side for the time being.

If Sons of Anarchy is about Jax’s heroic journey, I can foresee him coming back to struggle with things, and in the end choosing to lead a better life for both him and his family. Whether that is changing what the Sons of Anarchy do, or quitting the club, Jackson Teller will get out of the business.

Let’s just hope that it doesn’t end the same way it did for his father.

On Tuesday’s season three finale of Sons of Anarchy, be prepared for the intense excitement you are used to from the FX series. There will be death, surprises and enlightenment as far as what actually happened to John Teller all those years ago.

We’ll leave it up to your imagination for now, but we’ve seen “NS,” and it’s fantastic. TVF’s review will be posted the instant the episode ends tomorrow night for your comments.

Some other teasers for the Sons of Anarchy season finale:

  • SAMCRO looks to heal old wounds, but the Russians and ATF stand in the way.
  • Revelations about Jax’s father plunge him into another existential crisis.
  • There is a serious fake-out by both SAMCRO and Kurt Sutter and company.
  • The letters Maureen hid in Jax’s bag in Belfast are found. But not by Jax.
  • There will be bloodshed, with two familiar faces on the losing end.

Follow the jump for some comments from Kurt Sutter on the episode …

“This finale is what we’ve been building to all season, which is what finales tend to do, obviously, but in this case, especially for Jax. This is about the emotional ride that he’s been on all season and that has obviously impacted him and continues to influence him in the decisions he makes and the kind of man he’s going to become,” the series creator tells E! Online.

“I think we reveal in the finale that he makes some pretty severe choices and orchestrates them, and I think they are choices that will change him forever.”

Sounds like an intense night for Jax. As for Tara fans, you are also going to need a sedative or two during this finale. The suspense is almost unbearable.

Jax tells his girl that he’s going to make sure she’s OK, but is that something he can realistically promise? There is one scene in particular, before Jax and Tara set off on the third season’s final adventure, that is so sunlit and sweet and optimistic, you just know that something horrible is about to happen to one or both of them.

This is, after all, Kurt Sutter’s world. Nothing stays delightful for long.

The boss had this to say about that relationship: “I think that the whole thing that played out with Tara, in the first half of the season… that was him needing to distance himself from her, because he didn’t want the responsibility of potentially hurting somebody else the way he felt he hurt Abel. That fear is why he pushed her away and ultimately why – consciously or unconsciously – he went to the deal breaker, which was somebody else. And got his wish.”

“But when he finds out she’s pregnant, [together with] the consequences that she goes through and the changes that happen with her [because of the pregnancy and kidnapping], ultimately those dire circumstances bring them back together. He feels like, ‘I’m not going to let anything like what happened to Abel happen again,’ which is why I think he’s consciously making the dark, life-altering decisions he makes in the finale – so nothing like that happens again.”

There you go. Check back with TVF tonight for our review!

Samcro is back in Charming and Jax is now faced with a new problem: Hector Salazar has kidnapped Tara. Tig updates them on the situation; ATF and Charming PD are digging into Salazar and trying to find out his whereabouts.  They talk to his aunt who owned the house where he held Tara and Margaret, but so far nothing.  Clay decides to go talk to Unser, despite where they left off before they went to Belfast. Unser lets Clay know about San Joaquin taking over the department.  Without Charming PD, it’s a whole different town and a whole new ball game for Samcro.  He needs Clay’s help to prove Hale was behind Lumpy Feldstein’s death. That means they need to find Salazar and get him to talk. Mayans are looking for Salazar too, who has now become a threat to their new heroin operation.  Clay sets a meeting with Alvarez and tells him they need to bring in Salazar alive and also tells him about the bigger threat – Jacob Hale becoming mayor and turning Charming into a commercialized suburbia, bringing in County Sheriffs and complicating their new business deal.

Jax goes to Stahl who immediately wants to know where Jimmy O’Phelan is.  Jax tells her he’s up North with Putlova and the Russians, off the grid.  He says a brother in maximum security might be of help, Lenny the Pimp, who has direct ties to the Russians but no visitation rights.  Jax says if Stahl can get Lenny and Otto time together, they might get a lead on Putlova. But he can’t focus on any IRA stuff until Tara is found. Gemma goes to Stahl and tells her to call off whatever deal she has with Jax or she’ll turn herself in to the US attorney and tell them Stahl told her to lie, jeopardizing Stahl’s case and ruining her career.  Stahl’s partner and lover, Agent Amy Tyler catches the end of their conversation and demands to know what’s going on. Later, Stahl tells Jax they need to finish what they started and they need to go about it the right way. She tells him she needs the names of the Real IRA council members and she’ll clear Gemma. But if he gives her Jimmy, she’ll clear the club. She hands him a file and he takes it.

We see Jimmy at a safehouse up North with Viktor Putlova. Jimmy asks Putlova for safe passage to South America in exchange for the gun business, but Jimmy’s safety will still cost him two million dollars. They make arrangements for Donny to deliver the money, but Donny is only able to secure part of the money for now.

With the club’s impending jail sentence, Clay says he’ll need more men at the table. They decide to take another vote to patch Kozik in, but Tig still can’t get over what Kozik did to him and votes no. After the two men get to talk, in the end, we realize the “female” Tig and Kozik had been fighting about this whole time was the love of Tig’s life, his beloved dog, Missy.

Meanwhile, Salazar is growing more desperate by the minute; we see he’s killed another woman and hijacked her car. He then goes to Jacob Hale’s office and takes Jacob and Tara hostage.  He makes Tara call the police and he makes his demands: he needs to get to Tecate, Mexico safely in exchange for Hale, and he wants Jax in exchange for Tara.  No one thinks it’s a good idea, but it’s not even a question for Jax. When he goes in, he comes face-to-face with Salazar.  Salazar pistol-whips Jax, and as he raises his gun to him, Hale comes from behind and stabs Salazar in the kidney with a pen.  Salazar is able to escape, but Jax goes after him.  They reach the end of a hallway where Jax tells him he has nowhere left to go, he’ll let him live if he rats Hale out. Salazar is literally up against the wall with nowhere to turn, so he drops his weapon. Without hesitation, Jax plunges the knife into Salazar, killing him.  The Swat Team swoops in and Jax claims he acted in self-defense.

Later, we see Jax and Tara, reunited under better circumstances at the hospital seeing their unborn baby’s beating heart. Tara is finally reunited with Abel and the Teller family is whole once again. Things are looking up, even for Opie who proposes to Lyla on the rooftop after taking Gemma’s advice. But things for Stahl are spiraling out of control as her lies are beginning to catch up with her. After the hostage situation, she makes a very dark decision and turns to her partner and shoots and kills her.  She then calls it in, putting it on three Mexican males. The lies continue when she tells internal affairs that before she died, Tyler confessed to framing Gemma for Edmund Hayes’ murder and Gemma shot Polly Zobelle in self-defense. She tells IAD that Gemma was wrongly charged and that everything in Gemma’s statement was true, as she continues spinning her web of lies.

What are two things that the second season finale of Sons of Anarchy and this week’s penultimate episode of season three have in common? Well, both “Na Triobloidi” and “June Wedding” were fantastic hours of television, and not coincidentally they both featured Agent June Stahl going absolutely crazy.

After a wild and crazy journey to Ireland, the Sons returned to Charming this week, and things felt a little more familiar. The first half of the episode progressed slowly as most were getting their bearings on what was currently happening in the States.

9fd84f86894ed8098cf8072edf494daf Sons of Anarchy Review: "June Wedding"

Jax and Stahl were working out their deal, Gemma was trying to figure out what that deal was and stop it, Clay was figuring out what would happened to SAMCRO while they were in jail, Jimmy O was just trying to stay alive with the Russians, and everyone was trying to figure out how to get Tara back safely.

Yeah, there was a lot on everyone’s respective plates.

But as the back half of the episode unwound, things heated up quickly. Once Salazar took Hale as a second hostage and made the call to start negotiating his demands, I tensed up for the rest of the hour. Jax offering himself up to trade for Tara was nice, but the triple team of Jax, Tara and Hale on Salazar was better.

Jax chasing down an axe-wielding Salazar? Fantastic action.

What I didn’t enjoy, though, was Jax’s utter disregard for the plan to use Salazar in order to reveal how dirty Hale is. Was your need for revenge that severe? I thought Jax was supposed to be the thinker of this crew?

After the hostage situation was cleared up, and everyone except Salazar was safe, Agent June Stahl went into evil mastermind mode. I mean this woman is an absolute monster!

I was fine with her placing all of the blame for the Edmund Hayes stuff on her girlfriend, because Stahl is a complete b*tch, but this blew me out of the water. When she shot her girlfriend dead in an alley, as calm as can be, and then burst out into a fake scream cry, I had a difficult time realizing that it was actually happening.

Then she recounts the whole Hayes/Gemma story to IA, with tears no less, in order to verify Gemma’s story? Well it was Stahl’s story to begin with, but still, this woman is all sorts of crazy and brilliant.

Before witnessing Stahl’s genius plan, I thought the Russian was the only one thinking clearly in this universe. I mean he was keeping Jimmy hidden so that they can get enough money to safely send him to South America, where Jimmy will then make more money for the Russian.

A simple and obvious idea, I know, but most characters on this show don’t understand simply and obvious. Take Gemma for example. She can’t just trust her son in his plan; she has to go snooping around looking for answers, and threatening ATF agents.

Gemma has absolutely no idea what the deal is that Jax made with Stahl, yet she is trying to force Stahl into canceling it. Why? You don’t even know what it may or may not do for you?

“You need to keep it together, son,” Clay said to his step-son after Jax had his first outburst about Tara being kidnapped. Personally, I was glad to see Jax show that emotion.

I know he has spent what seems like forever looking for his kidnapped baby, but for the first half hour this week it looked like Jax could care less that his girlfriend was being held captive by a crazed lunatic. Sure he made up for it with his heroics and revenge stab on Salazar, but I wanted Jax to show as much emotion towards Tara’s absence as he did Abel’s.

So now that Tara is home safe, and her baby is as healthy as ever, there’s only one more thing on the season three bucket list for SAMCRO. They need to find Jimmy O so that Jax’s deal can go through and everyone can get off Scott free… Well except for Agent Tyler, who was murdered by her own girlfriend.

Other thoughts

  • Quietly a great Opie ep.  I loved how he went to Gemma for advice about Lyla. He’s such a romantic, “we should get married.” Will she say yes? I doubt it.
  • Really?!?!  This thing with Tig and Kozik was about a dog? Tell me I’m dreaming. He “loved her too.” What did Kozik do, steal Tig’s dog? I’m a bit confused.
  • Juice is a Puerto Rican from Queens that speaks better Yiddish than Spanish. Classic.
  • Was that actually supposed to be a fake out with the girl lying under the bloody blanket? Because if that really was a dead Tara, it would have been the most anticlimactic main character death I have ever seen.
