From the creative mind of Kurt Sutter (“The Shield”), the adrenalized drama centers on a notorious outlaw motorcycle club intent on protecting their sheltered small town against encroaching drug dealers, corporate developers, and overzealous law officers. The club is equally determined to protect their ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. Charlie Hunnam stars as Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller, a man whose love for the brotherhood is tested by his growing apprehension for its lawlessness. Katey Sagal stars as Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax’s force-of-nature mother, who along with Ron Perlman as Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow, Jax’s stepfather and MC president, have their own darker vision for the club.

Charlie-Sons-Anarchy_240.jpg Image Credit: Prashant Gupta/FX Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter defended his style of storytelling via his Twitter page today after one of his stars complained to a Chicago paper that the actors were often left in the dark about future plotlines. Sutter tweeted that “I regret some of my cast feel that the writers are conspiring to `keep actors in the dark’” after star Charlie Hunnam (Jax Teller) said he didn’t appreciate the lack of information about his character. “There’s a philosophy here, which I don’t always agree with as an actor, that it’s better for actors to know as little as possible,” Hunnam told the Chicago Tribune. “I actually don’t agree with that because most of my experiences in acting are in film, where you know all of the answers going in, and you make your choices accordingly.

“Keeping actors in the dark is not always the right move, because without knowing the direction that something’s going, one can make slight mistakes,” Hunnam continued. “There has to be a big, psychological leap to get to where you’re being taken.”

Today, Sutter tweeted that “I share big story arcs with my actors before we start shooting” and “try to bring them up to speed emotionally so we’re all on the same page” before continuing with “the specific plot twists and turns are not locked down until i’m into my draft. That means the actors don’t know until they get the script.” He writes later that “I love my cast and try to challenge their talent with quality writing and deep, 3-dimensional stories … that effort requires focus and time” before posting “perhaps if they were doing a network procedural they’d have a showrunner who could tell them everything and assuage their apprehension.”

Sons of Anarchy kicks off its third season on FX Sept. 7.

On Tuesday, September 7, 2010, Sons of Anarchy returns for its third season. The cast recently spoke about the show and their characters.
Sons of Anarchy is the highest-rated show in the history of FX. The cast and producers of the series joined the Television Critics Association on August 3, 2010 to discuss the series and their characters. The show revolves around an outlaw motorcycle club in Central California who make most of their money by selling illegal guns to street gangs.

Charlie Hunnam

Jax Teller is played by actor Charlie Hunnam. “I never think of ‘Jax’ as a good guy or a bad guy. I just try to find the truth in the situation that he’s in. And, for me, thinking about how the audience will receive something is kind of corrupting to the process. I don’t really think about that. I just try to be very honest and to really try to do justice to the great writing.”

Mo Ryan: Where does Jax stand at the beginning of the season?

Charlie Hunnam: I think my initial way of handling it is to get very drunk and try to suppress a little bit of the pain. And the boys quickly remind me, that’s not how we do it and we start to get a little more proactive.

MR: Do you think he puts being a father ahead of being part of the club?

CH: Yeah, I do. One of the things that [the Abel kidnapping] pulls into focus for me is that I think in my heart, Abel was always put first, but in practice, I think I was really neglecting him [in favor of] my responsibilities to the club. If Jax was asked where his primary responsibility is, he’d say Abel, but I don’t think that was ever really in practice, and I think this is going to motivate him to make a big change.

MR: How much of Jax’s path is influenced by reading John Teller’s manuscript? And how much is just him being a restless soul?

CH: I think it informed the path that I’m trying to take. I think that was really always there, though, and it was reassuring me that I wasn’t crazy for desiring these things. It pulled into focus exactly what I was [thinking about]. But I also think about the fact that, these were his wishes — they were unrealized. Jax realizes how idealistic that was. I think I’m trying to figure out what I can actually change and be realistic and be happy with that. Obviously there are giant problems between Jax and Clay but I think all of that stuff, though it rears its head here and there, needs to be put on the back burner until we get Abel back and figure out what we’re doing. There’s also this big thing hanging over us [the gun charges the Sons face].

Charlie Hunnam, the star of the FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy, made like his character and didn’t mince too many words while describing the Sons’ Emmy snub on Tuesday during an FX session on the show. “I personally don’t subscribe to Emmys or awards or any of that shit. I think it’s all a crock of shit,” he said. “It’s all just so corrupting. We weren’t on he receiving end of a force that can change the dynamic of what we’re doing. All of that crap is just secondary and completely unimportant but does have the potential to ruin a good thing. So let me just say f ‘em.”

Sons creator/exec producer Kurt Sitter sounded a somewhat more circumspect tone on the issue, deciding not to use any profanity but also equally un-thrilled. “Here’s what I’ll say about it: Half the stories you see the day of the nominations are about the nominations, and the other half are about the absurdity of the nominations and the snubs,” he maintained. “To me, this says the system is somewhat flawed.”
