Sons of Anarchy has added another major name to season five.

Following the news that Jimmy Smits will portray a dangerous mentor of Jax’s this fall on the FX biker drama, we can now confirm (via TV Line) that Harold Perrineau (Lost) has signed on for the role of Damon Pope.

Pope, of course, was mentioned but not seen on the Sons of Anarchy Season 4 finale, after Tig ran over and killed his daughter in a high speed chase. Creator Kurt Sutter has made it clear that this Oakland-based gangster will be seeking revenge when SOA returns some time in September.

Filming on new episodes commenced this week and you can take a look now at what other characters Sutter has teased will come on board Sons of Anarchy Season 5.

In case it was possible to get any more excited for season five of Sons of Anarchy…

FX has announced that Jimmy Smits has signed on for a major arc on upcoming season of this Kurt Sutter drama, as the former NYPD Blue star will come on board as Neron “Nero” Padilla, a Latino gangster who becomes somewhat of a mentor for Jax.

In addition to Smits, look for Sons of Anarchy to add at least one more major season five player.

Sutter Tweeted this week that Forest Whitaker – with whom he worked on The Shield – is in among the contenders to portray Damon Pope, the father of a young woman Tig mowed down on the season four finale.

Meanwhile, Sutter has released a new, extended version “WTF Sutter,” in this case speaking in depth on Smits’ role and Sons of Anarchy season 5 in general. Watch now!

At last night’s PaleyFest panel, Kurt Sutter teased Sons of Anarchy season five as a challenge for the new SAMCRO President.

Will Jax Teller follow the lead of his real father or his step-father, both of whom sat at the head of that table and neither of whom concluded his reign in a celebratory manner? We can’t wait for the answer.

Prior to that Q&A, meanwhile, TV Fanatic was on the event’s red carpet, chatting up Sutter about the dark path down which he took Clay; asking Katey Sagal if Gemma has a future with Unser; grilling Tommy Flanagan on how much Chibbs knows about Juice; and thanking Theo Rossi for his participation in this charitable endeavor.

Watch the video interviews now and let the countdown until season five begin…

It didn’t take long for the Sons of Anarchy panel at PaleyFest 2012 to turn dirty.

Within minutes of being asked whether Chucky’s masturbation problem was an issue for anyone else in the cast, Tommy Flanagan and Dayton Callie both acted as if they, too, had lost digits as punishment for the chronic habit.

Then there was creator Kurt Sutter, who – in response to a question about Callie’s Wayne Unser and his feelings for Gemma, portrayed by Sutter’s better half, Katey Sagal – replied: “Maybe it’s me, but I assume everyone wants to f-ck my wife.”

Sutter also addressed questions about season five, which he’s only just begun to write.

“I’ve always wanted to play this idea of putting Jax at the head of that table,” he said, referring to events from the season four finale and teasing that episode to come would explore “the ripple effect of that on the guys and the loyalties of it and where people land.”

The executive producer and serial Tweeter (“I’m so desperately in need of attention,” he joked) added that the character of Damon Pope would be introduced and play a key role in responding to Tig’s “clusterf-ck” from the finale, which led to the death of Pope’s daughter.

But the season will come down, as you might expect, to the new SAMCRO President. Said Sutter

“The interesting dynamic to play out this season is seeing Jax at the head of that table and the struggle that he has of being king. How can you be the leader of an organized crime syndicate and not become Clay? And if you choose not to become Clay, are you doomed to the fate of John Teller?”

Other highlights moments from the panel:

  • The gang making fun or Ron Perelman lack of motorcycling skills, with Tommy Flanagan (above) re-enacting his co-star’s face when he tops out at 11 miles per hour on the bike.
  • Theo Rossi sharing a story about freaking out Tom Cruise at the Super 8 premiere when he arrived in full on Juice attire, including mohawk and tattoos.
  • Might Sutter actually pen a prequel for FX? “I see it as a different show,” he said of focusing on the First Nine. “Not a continuation or another version of Sons of Anarchy, but a more political and socially historical sort of show. I definitely have some interest in doing it. I’d like to explore it in some capacity.
  • Steven Tyler was originally meant to play David Hasselhoff’s porn king, but the singer got caught up on tour with Aerosmith.
  • Sagal said she has no idea what will happen with Gemma on season five, but it’s clear what she wants to see happen: “I think Gemma should sit at the head of the table.”

Eff him. It’s time to really get moving again on Sons of Anarchy.

So Kurt Sutter writes in his latest blog entry, updating fans on the status of season five – aka The Journey of Jax – which begins shooting in May.

But the creator is already hard at work on the premiere script and reports that the new season will introduce viewers to four new characters. One is to be expected, while the other three sounds interestingly vague:

  1. Damon Pope, the notorious gang leader who’s daughter Tig killed with his car on the season four finale.
  2. Someone with a patch we’ve never seen.
  3. A female Sutter describes as “hard, curvy and very sexy.” At least we assume it’s a female.
  4. Someone who the producer simply says “packs a .45 with a walrus tusk handle”  and may be considered dangerous, but “just wants to be loved.”

No air date has been announced, but season five of Sons of Anarchy will kick off in September.

This is mostly a formality at this point, seeing as Kurt Sutter just inked a deal through season seven, but it’s an exciting formality nonetheless:

FX has officially picked up Sons of Anarchy for a sixth season.

Sons of Anarchy is the network’s highest-rated drama and by giving the greenlight to season six before season five even airs, FX is allowing Sutter to truly map out upcoming storylines.

He has said in the past he envisions SOA running for seven seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke this news.

Thank you, FX and Kurt Sutter!

The network announced in October than it had renewed Sons of Anarchy for a fifth season, though it failed to mention that the show’s creator was actually not signed on for it at the time.

But we can now confirm Sutter hasn’t just reached a deal for this fall -  he’s also a go for seasons six and seven!

Katey Sagal and Kurt Sutter: TV Fanatics!

In a slight jab for the way AMC and Matthew Weiner complicated their contract negotiations, to the point where season five of Mad Men was delayed by many months, Sutter Tweeted this week:

“closed my deal for 3 more years on SOA. no headlines, no pushed schedule, no stealing from paul. thank you FX and 20th for your generosity.”

Sutter also updated his blog earlier this month and gave fans their first teases for season five, which he deems will be a journey for new SAMCRO President Jax Teller.

If you’re Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, it’s not too early to start thinking about season five. Or, fortunately for us, to start blogging about it.

Having already said that Opie and Wendy will return to the series this fall, Sutter wrote this week that the upcoming season will focus heavily on Jax and his “journey” as President of SAMCRO. The man must decide what he wants his legacy to be.

17b392c6569ddd0823993ec4e6463827 Sons of Anarchy Season 5: A Journey for Jax

“This season will be a pivotal one in the arc of the series,” Sutter wrote on his blog. “Not that all the seasons haven’t been essential in shaping the mythology, but this season will begin to lay track for how the series ends. In a feature film, season 5 would be the end of act two. Where the hero has been faced with the primary conflict and obstacles and is forced to make a decision that either ends well or not-so-well.”

Sutter – who also plays Otto on SOA, of course – adds that the season ahead will slow down the action a bit, referring to it as “deliberate.” He writes:

“I’m not sure how to expand upon that other to say that the decisions our hero makes will be less impulsive and more permanent. The stakes will be ratcheted up while the pace will be slowed down. Not that we won’t have all the pulpy goodness we have every season (we will still blow shit up), it’ll just have a different rhythm.”

And we’ll no doubt eat up every second of it.
